This is something I've been meaning to ask about, also.
I have noticed that monsters can do multiple hits in a single turn and will continue doing this (increasing the amount of hits) until the end of the fight, which can be nasty if multiple monsters are on you doing this.
Tip: Move away from the monster/s, heal if needed and then move back to attack. More often than not they will revert to single hits.
Now what I have ALSO noticed, is that you would only encounter this with monsters you are of lower or equal level to (possibly slightly higher).
My guess is that monsters have a hidden level attached to them and that that level would likely be that of the players level required to do the kill quest associated with that monster.
For example, you will need to be at level (x) to do the quest: 'kill this amount of monsters'. These monsters will also be at level (x). Killing these monsters prior to and at level (x) will mean that that monster is strong against you and has a chance to multi-hit you. Although, when you are at a level beyond level (x) you are now stronger than this monster and will not get combo'd.
This to me feel like an intentional mechanic, as it would always happen to me with new monsters and has never happened once against monsters I am now stronger than. This could also be due to me having stronger attacks now and killing the monster before it gets a chance to begin multi-hits. I will need to test this by extending the duration of a fight with a weaker monster and seeing if eventually it multi-hits. Players have told me it is happening to them (currently) while they are of lower/equal level.
If this IS an intentional mechanic, honestly I'm all for it:
* It makes fighting new monsters exciting and keeps you on your toes.
* It makes you want to level up quickly to become stronger than your enemy.
* It makes higher level monsters that much more of a risk to try and do sneaky kills on to steal valuable exp/drops.
If this is a bug, then yeah, it's still happening.
